The history of the Altländer Apotheke – a pharmacy and institution since 1803

A pharmacy was first mentioned in Jork in 1803, virtually 200 years ago. At the time, it was the only pharmacy in the Altes Land, so was permitted to call itself the Altländer Apotheke. As from 1850, it was situated at Westerjork 22, readily accessible to patients. Some came on bicycles, some on foot, others even by horse and cart. As from 1912, the pharmacist, Werner Lambrecht, took over the business. Older citizens still remember him and his wife, as they were exceptionally kind-hearted. They erected fairy-tale figures that could be illuminated in their garden at Christmas.

When the lights were out (which was generally the case, to save electricity), the children would tap on his window, and Herr Lambrecht would put the lights on again for ten minutes. It was all great fun. The Altländer Apotheke survived both World Wars, and looked after the wounded and needy when required. Eberhard Bleich carried on the business at this location into the 1970s.
One had to reckon at least a quarter of an hour to collect a prescription, as the medicine often had to be mixed on the spot.

Bleich later built a new pharmacy in the centre of Jork – located where the Tourist Information building now stands. Unfortunately, the old house and garden nearly went to rack and ruin, but dedicated Jork politicians saw to it that the building was preserved.
