Am Gräfengericht. Photograph taken around 1968

On this photograph we can see the row of houses on the road Am Gräfengericht, which runs from the roundabout to Borstel. The former district court can still be seen on the left of the picture; it was bought in 1773 and rebuilt to succeed the Seat of Justice, that by that time had outgrown its needs. To the left of the court, but not on the photograph, there used to be a so-called Behelfsgelass für Festgenommene – detention cells – that were used as a jail for temporary prisoners, even into the 1970s. Both buildings no longer exist. The Textilhaus Meyns used to stand to the right of the district court, but it, too, has been taken down.

Next to it, the house is still standing – but modernised – in which different bakers used to have their shops. Today it is used as offices. Further along the road we can see the half-timbered house that used to be Hardorp the butcher’s, but is now a women’s boutique. The small house that was next to it was taken down to build a car park.

To the right of the photograph we can see the Loheyde farmhouse again, in a very poor state of repair. Please go to Location 4 for further information on it. Information board 4.
