The Old Schoolhouse. Photograph taken in 1890.

This is where the stately Old Schoolhouse (the so-called Rektorschule, or headmaster’s school) originally stood, that was built in 1890. It was founded to offer greater learning opportunities than the other schools of the time. It later became the Mittelschule, then was extended west to become the Realschule Altes Land (both were secondary schools). There was a separate building with children’s toilets and a small shop, that sold milk and cocoa during break. The editorial staff of the Altländer Zeitung used to be located in the building east of the school. The newspaper first appeared on 1st April 1894.

When the offices moved to Buxtehude, a book shop took its place in the front part of the building, following which the Police, the council administration offices, several school classes and, in the 1980s, Jork’s youth centre and the town’s archives could be found here. In front of the houses there used to be a yellow telephone booth of around one metre square; it was much-frequented but always needed a steady supply of small change. The school then moved to a new site in 1973, and the entire complex up to the Am Gräfenhof road was demolished in 1995. It was replaced by a supermarket. Nowadays the only reminders of the former buildings are the semi-circular bowed windows of the new gables, which were copied from the Old Schoolhouse.
